5/2 solenoid valves or 5 way solenoid valves are interchangeable with 4/2 solenoid valves, 5/2 solenoid valves have four ports or pipe connections and two outlets to exhaust pressure from the valve.
5/2 way solenoid valves are usually used to operate double-acting cylinders and similar to a 4/2 solenoid valve can be described as a ‘change-over valve’ – it applies air and exhausts air to and from a double-acting cylinder depending on the position of the valve. In one valve position pressure is connected and applied to one cylinder port, and pressure is exhausted from the other port. In another valve position, applied pressure and exhaust are reversed at the cylinder selections and therefore the function of the valve is swapped over.
5/3 solenoid valves are slightly different in that they have three functions. In a 5/3 solenoid valve the positions can either be so pressure is applied, pressure is exhausted or all 5 ports are blocked – the main reason for this last position would be to maintain high standards of safety.
There are two types of operations of 5/2 way solenoid valves available:
Single solenoid: used when automatic return of valve on electrical power failure is required
Dual solenoid: used when equipment must not change position when electrical power fails, ensuring high standard of safety for personal and equipment at all times.
Asco Numatics range of 5/2 solenoid valves are available in various sizes, pressures and voltages, with special materials and voltages available on request.
