Subsea and marine environments are some of the toughest on the planet; extremes in pressure, potential degradation through saltwater and ozone, and the erosive and hazardous chemicals often dealt with in such industries ensures that any product put to use has tough demands placed upon it. We explore in more depth some of the subsea valve products available from MGA Controls that have been specifically designed for use in this environment.

Why are subsea valves so special?

Subsea valves are designed specifically to be able to withstand the high external water pressure that comes from operating at depth. They also require excellent sealing performance (separating the flow from the external sea water) as well as the need for the materials that they are manufactured from to be extremely resistant to corrosion. Used most commonly in oil and gas applications, the fluids flowing through the valves are both extremely valuable and also potentially hazardous. Subsea isolation valves are designed to stop the flow of such fluids to a given piece of equipment or subsystem, usually for maintenance or safety purposes, meaning that a subsea valve is a safety-critical component in such industries.

Subsea valves from MGA Controls

MGA Controls have been supplying specialist valves to the most demanding industries for many years. We have a range of subsea valves available from class-leading manufacturers. Some of those include:

IMI Maxseal solenoid valves

IMI Maxseal are renowned for their design and production of valves for use in harsh environments worldwide, particularly well-known for their affiliation with oil and gas applications.

ICO2S series of solenoid poppet valves

With operating pressures of up to 207 bar (3002 psi), this is a pilot assisted solenoid operated poppet valve. This extreme-performance valve has been designed for controlling hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. With ATEX approval, this valve is intrinsically safe, intended specifically for environments such as offshore, chemical and oil refineries, and oil and gas.

ICO4S series of solenoid direct acting poppet valves

This Maxseal solenoid valve is a 2/2, 3/2 or 5/2 direct acting poppet valve with ATEX approval. This valve is industry standard in pneumatic switching and air control applications for oil and gas, and has been for over 20 years. Manufactured from stainless steel 316L (but with alternative options available), the valve offers up to 414 bar inlet pressure and various voltage options.

Alco Subsea products

Alco Valves have been designing and manufacturing critical subsea valves specifically for oil and gas and other hazardous environments for over 25 years.

SSB1 subsea instrument ball valves

This range of Alco subsea valves has been designed for light to medium service applications. It uses a floating pattern ball valve design, suitable for configuring with threaded connections in a variety of materials. This subsea isolation valve is suitable for operational pressures of up to 10,000 psi and a working depth of 300 metres. With API product qualifications and trim materials made of corrosion-resistant materials, this is an ideal subsea valve solution.

SSCVP subsea check valves

This range of piston check valves has been designed for use in gas or liquid applications. Available to API or ASME standards and in a range of materials, this is a high-performance subsea valve with a pressure rating of up to 10,000 psi and is suitable for working up to 3000 metres underwater.

SSN1 Substar needle valve

This subsea isolation valve uses a superior design of metal to metal, anti-rotating tip, available for configuration with various end connections in a range of materials. It meets the API 6A standard to PR2 and has been fully endurance tested. With a pressure rating of up to 10,000 psi and designed for use under water to up to 3000 metres, this subsea valve is suitable for diver operation.
