Nozzle Check Valves

Designed for use in the severest and most demanding applications.

Nozzle Check Valves or Axial Nozzle Check Valves are high performance, Non-Slam and self-actuated (or automatic) Non-Return Valves for use in the severest and most demanding applications.

Nozzle type check valves feature a spring assisted, short stroke Disc action which reacts quickly to high Deceleration Rates, closing the valve in a fraction of a second providing a Non-Slam performance. Such rapid and smooth closing action prevents high Reverse Velocities building up in a system, protects expensive pumping equipment and pipework, eliminates damaging Water Hammer and minimises Surge pressures.

Nozzle type check valves also feature a built-in Diffuser that distinguishes this type of Non-Return Valve from a Silent or Axial Check Valve. The Diffuser recovers head losses introduced by the Nozzle type short stroke Disc orifice, minimises energy consumption and reduces turbulence through the valve, preventing ‘Flutter’. Head losses can be recovered by as much as 9/10 of that of a Silent Check Valve or Axial Check Valve!

Nozzle type check valves are designed to suit liquids or gaseous fluids, free of solids, in applications from Natural Gas to Chemical Plants to Potable Water, meeting the stringent standards from API (American Petroleum Institute) to DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) to WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications 8.09 i1).

Tailored to suit the application, each valve can be optimised with; a range of body styles and lengths including wafer, flanged wafer short pattern and long pattern; Flange Connections up to PN400 / ANSI 2500; sizes from DN25 up to DN2200; a selection of valve orifice internals; a range of differing springs for handling an infinite variety of Deceleration Rates; and for a range of Media, Pressure Ratings and Flow Rates. Materials include as a minimum: Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Super Duplex, 6Mo and Nickel-Aluminium-bronze.

Frequently asked questions

Non Slam Nozzle Check Valves

When choosing a Nozzle Check Valve, it is important to fully understand the features and their compatibility with the system flow parameters of your chosen application. Understanding the dynamic characteristics is extremely important and choosing the right valve design can have a huge impact on the service life of your component.

A Non Slam Nozzle Check Valve is designed to limit water hammer, a pressure surge that can arise in any pumping system, which undergoes an abrupt change in its rate of flow. Water hammer is a common problem with traditional check valves, however, a Non Slam Nozzle Check Valve does not rely on flow reversal or gravity to close and instead uses an Axial Spring Solid Disc design or a Friction Free Multi-Spring Ring Disc design. As the spring force is optimised to suit the applications and the closing disc has a much shorter distance to travel than traditional valves, water hammer is reduced or completely prevented.

Nozzle Check Valve Applications

Nozzle type check valves were specifically designed for hazardous systems where backflow was a concern. At MGA Controls, we can supply a wide range of Nozzle Check Valves, suited to critical service applications for the Water and Process Industries.  Non Slam Nozzle Check Valves minimise the damaging effects of water hammer whilst minimising pressure loss in piping systems.

Manufactured from a range of hard-wearing materials, Nozzle Check Valves can be used for Gas Transmission, Power Generation, Chemical Processing, Hydrocarbon Processing and Water Transmission.
