Poppet valves are often associated with pressure control equipment and applications. They are directional control valves and are typically characterised as being high flow, fast acting valves. This is due to the large flow paths through the main body of the valve. Typically, poppet valves can be opened quickly, making them perfect for use in engines. In this article, MGA Controls will be discussing the poppet valve’s working principal, design and usage.

Poppet valve working principal

Imagine the poppet valve as a plug in a sink. When you remove the plug, the flow path opens rapidly and the opening is large. The large opening of the poppet valve allows media to pass through the valve quickly and easily.

Poppet valves are usually made up of a flat disk of metal with a long rod, known as the valve stem. The stem is used to push down on the valve and open it, with a spring generally used to close it when the stem is not being pushed on. The stem can be moved by a variety of actuators, including pilot, manual, mechanical or solenoid operator, depending on the application at hand.

Poppet valve design and usage

Poppet valves have a slender stem and mushroom-shaped head. They are commonly used in engines. When utilised in a piston engine they work by opening and closing the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder head. The engine manoeuvres the valves by pushing on the stems with cams and cam followers. The valve lift and how quickly (or slowly) the valve is opened is determined by the shape and position of the cam.
