When considering non-slam valves for severe and demanding applications, nozzle check valves should be your first port of call. The high-performance characteristics of this nozzle type check valve can assure optimal flow control in even the toughest environments. In this article, MGA Controls explains how nozzle check valves work and the benefits they offer users.
What is a nozzle check valve?
A type of non-slam check valve, nozzle check valves are high performance and self-actuated regulating devices. These reliable non-return valves are designed specifically with demanding applications in mind. As such, this means they can react promptly to high deceleration rates with a non-slam performance, which minimises water hammer in reverse flow conditions.
Compared to other check valve types, nozzle check valves offer unrivalled high flow, energy efficiencies and non-slam performance. They come with a selection of valve body and internal orifice designs and springs that are specifically optimised for the flow conditions of any given application. In addition, they also feature a built-in diffuser, which recovers head losses unlike any other non-return valve and minimises energy consumption.
Nozzle check valves also feature a spring assisted, short stroke disc action that closes the valve within mere fractions of a second. This function is able to protect pipework, expensive pumping and related equipment from any high reverse velocities and damaging surge pressures.
Types of nozzle check valves
Here at MGA Controls, we are able to provide nozzle check valve types for every occasion. Tailored to suit the flow and dynamics of any demanding application, our nozzle check valves can be optimised for a wide variety of factors, such as:
- System deceleration rates
- Reverse flow velocities
- Critical flow velocities
- High flow rates
- Minimum head loss
- Maximum energy efficiencies
- Maximum longevity
Energy efficient designs with unmatched longevity make nozzle check valves ideal for the Potable Water UK Water Industry, even buried service. The two main types of nozzle check valves we provide are the Z Type Solid Disc and the N Type Ring Disc, Metal to Metal seated, maintenance-free valves from Noreva GmbH.
Z Type solid disc nozzle check valves
Featuring a single turbulent-free, aerodynamic flow path, Noreva’s Z Type Nozzle Check Valve is a high performance, non-slam, high-flow, low head loss, solid disc non-return valve for sizes up to DN250. A single spring design with diffuser affords users with maximum pressure drop recovery which maximises energy efficiencies. Whilst minimising turbulence, the Diffuser also stabilises disc performance. Multiple spring torque options are available to suit a variety of Critical Velocities but even in partially open states, the Z Type check valve can perform without ‘Flutter’ and wear. This allows operation in low-flow conditions with a far-wider operating range and low whole-life costs.
N Type ring disc nozzle check valves
The N Type ring disc check valve from Noreva is designed with a low weight ring disc mounted to a frictionless, maintenance-free, multi-spring radial guide assembly.
Featuring a twin turbulent-free, aerodynamic flow path, Noreva’s N Type Nozzle Check Valve is a high performance, non-slam, high-flow, low head loss, ring disc non-return valve for sizes DN300 up to DN2200. The multiple spring design and radial guide assembly with diffuser is exceptionally responsive and affords users with maximum pressure drop recovery which maximises energy efficiencies. Whilst minimising turbulence, the Diffuser also stabilises disc performance. Multiple spring torque options are available to suit a variety of Critical Velocities but even in partially open states, the N Type check valve can perform without ‘Flutter’ and wear. This allows operation in low-flow conditions with a far-wider operating range and low whole-life costs.
